FAQs about No Fly Zone
No Fly Design’s products now feature the No Fly Zone™ Insect Defense System to repel ticks, mosquitos and other biting insects to offer even greater protection for our four legged friends. No Fly Zone’s active ingredient, Permethrin, is a synthetic form of a naturally occurring repellent found in the chrysanthemum flower. The product offers superior protection over other insect treatments because of a proprietary process that binds the Permethrin securely to the fibers of the fabric to provide a durable and long-lasting protection.
No Fly Zone maintains wash durability up to 70 washings.
We are frequently asked about having No Fly Zone™ products in a shared cat/dog household. Cats lack an enzyme to metabolize Permethrin, so it can be toxic if enough is ingested. However, it is very unlikely that a cat could consume enough No Fly Zone fabric to reach a toxic level, because the Permethrin is bonded tightly and does not migrate. There are flea control products on the market that are “for dogs only” containing 45-60% Permethrin. No Fly Zone fabric only contains a fraction of that (0.52% Permethrin).

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is No Fly Zone™ technology and how does it work?
Registered with the EPA, Burlington® Lab’s No Fly Zone® insect repellent technology works as a contact repellent. No Fly Zone’s active ingredient permethrin is a synthetic form of a naturally occurring repellent found in the chrysthanthemum flower. NFZ affects the insect’s nervous system causing “hot foot,” making the insect fly away before it may bite. This technology may help to prevent the spread of insect borne diseases by repelling insects away from the body through apparel or gear. It is effective against mosquitoes, ticks, ants, chiggers, flies and midges.
“In a field trial conducted in Alaska, persons wearing permethrin-treated uniforms and 35% Deet (on exposed skin) had more than 99.9% protection...”*
What makes the No Fly Zone™ insect repellent technology different from other applications?
Many applications have been developed using permethrin and incorporating it into textiles, but never with our type of secure binding technology. Previously, spraying, dipping or application through industrial washers and various nozzle applications have been utilized, but they must be reapplied often to maintain effectiveness.
No Fly Zone insect repellent technology utilizes a proprietary process to bind the permethrin securely to the fibers of the finished fabric. This patented process tightly binds the permethrin to the fabric, fibers and yarns; crosslinking their properties on a molecular level. No Fly Zone maintains efficacy and wash durability up to 70 washings while still retaining up to 89% effectiveness.
Is No Fly Zone™ insect repellent fabric safe?
The use of permethrin on apparel to protect individuals from insect bites is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, and is approved for use by the U.S. Military.
How do I care for my No Fly Zone™ product?
No Fly Zone treated garments can washed in your normal home laundry.
